On Friday, June 19, the Governor proposed a cut to state funding for public libraries of $227.3 million in fiscal years 2010 and 2011 that begins July 1, 2009. The Ohio General Assembly’s Conference Committee has until June 30th to accept or reject the proposal that could destroy library service in Ohio. This cut is in addition to the 20% reduction in funding that libraries are already facing, because our funding comes from 2.22% of the state’s declining General Revenue Fund. This will mean a more than 50% cut in funding for many of Ohio's public libraries.
Under the Governor’s proposal Newcomerstown Public Library will lose an estimated $95,000.00 this year,$146,000 in 2010 and $108,000 in the first 6 months of 2011. We are still paying on the loan used to complete the new building in 2000. We will be faced with severely cutting our hours and services on every level.
